Gurmar – a Natural Sugar Killer for Diabetics

Gurmar or Gymnema sylvestre is a medicinal plant that has been used in India for the treatment of diabetes for nearly two thousand years. This herb is often referred to as nature’s sugar killer because of its extract’s property of suppressing the ability to taste sweetness when placed on the tongue.

Gurmar leaf extracts are widely available in the market and are used as an alternative medicine for diabetics as well as heart disease, asthma, piles, bronchitis. The extract of the plant’s leaves is also used for reducing sugar cravings with the effect lasting for up to about two hours.

The major bio-active constituents of Gymnema sylvestris are a group of oleanane type triterpenoid saponins known as gymnemic acids. Gymnemic acids possess anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory properties. According to some studies, the extracts derived from Gymnema sylvestre can be useful as therapeutic agents for the stimulation of insulin secretion in individuals with type 2 diabetes.
